I will Find You

When I saw that there was a new Harlan Coben book out, I ordered it immediately.  I have read all of his books and have been missing him!   The sad thing about this book is that it was so good I couldn't put it down and spent all night (no sleep!) reading.  Now I have to wait for him to publish a new book again!

David Burroughs is jailed for murdering his 3 year old son, Matthew, though he insists he's innocent.  After five years in prison (during which time his wife divorces him, marries again, and is pregnant) David is visited by his sister-in-law who has shocking news for him--she's convinced that she has seen Matthew at a fair, and she even has a photo.  David needs to break out of prison to try and find his son...and prove his innocence.  Fortunately the warden of the prison just happens to be David's godfather and helps him escape.  From there the action -- finding important people, learning about Matthew's birth, almost getting caught by the police many times -- the action just goes on and on and on and it's impossible to shut the book and go to sleep.

As with all Coben books, there is an unexpected twist at the end  Read this book. It's another wonderful Harlan Coben story.

Well, that will teach me not to listen to advertising. I have kind of stopped reading Patterson since he started writing with co-authors.  Some books are better than others, depending on who the co-author is.  Patterson says he likes developing plots but likes others to write them. Patterson and co-author Lupica (and later their wives) have made ads where they talk about how this is the best book they have ever written.  Their enthusiasm is so intense that I broke down and got the book. They are wrong. This is an OK book, but definitely nothing like the earlier books that Patterson wrote by himself.  I only give it 2-1/2 stars. Earth Abides

  This seems the perfect time to re-read this book, written in 1949. I read it during college, but remembered very little of it. The character Isherwood Williams ("Ish") is in the mountains for some "time away." He is bitten by a snake and ends up in his cabin for a couple of weeks, recovering from the snake bite and some sort of illness. When he returns to civilization, he discovers that there has been a massive pandemic and everybody is dead. He is able to get food, a better car, gasoline, etc. by taking what has been abandoned. He settles in his family home in Berkeley and then drives across the country, finding other individuals or small groups who have survived. Returning to Berkeley. he continues to explore and finds, first, a woman with whom he partners, and then a handful of others who have also survived. The Baby Left Behind

Cate desperately wants to have a baby, but is unable.  She has been accepted as  the adoptive mother to a newborn, only to have the mother have second thoughts after giving birth. Jada is a recovering drug addict who experiences tremendous pains after lunch at a Mexican restaurant and assumes it's food poisoning, only to discover after hours of painful cramps that she is giving birth -- having no clue that she was pregnant.  How is she going to care for a newborn she didn't know she was expecting. Cate receives a phone call on her way to the hospital to pick up the second baby she is about to adopt, letting her know that this mother too has changed her mind.  She is devastated.
